Autumn Trees for Seasonal Colour

Autumn trees create beautiful foliage. We plant and prune trees like this every week at GGM Landscaping, across gardens from Cambuslang to the wider Central Belt. Here is our advice to add to the scenery.

Why Leaves Turn Colour in Autumn – Garden advice by Glasgow’s tree pruners

As days shorten and temperatures drop, a tree starts pulling nutrients back into its branches and roots to conserve water ahead of a dormant winter, and chlorophyll production stops.

Once that green fades, the pigments underneath show through.

Carotenoids give the yellows and golds, the same family of pigment found in carrots.

Anthocyanin, which some trees produce fresh in autumn rather than storing it all year, is responsible for the deeper reds and purples.

Sugar trapped in the leaf after the tree seals off its veins drives that production.

A bright, cold autumn tends to produce a better palette across the garden than a mild, wet one, which is why autumn beauty varies year to year, from a rainbow of colour to a muddy scatter of yellow leaves.

The Best Trees for Autumn Colour in Your Garden

Acers and Japanese Maples

Acers, or Japanese maples, moves through amber, then bright red, then a purple so deep it reads almost black.

Red maple and other larger maple tree varieties give the same fiery reds on a bigger scale, useful where a Japanese maple’s compact size won’t fill the space.

Position matters with acers in your garden, because full sun bleaches the colour out early and strong wind scorches the leaf edges brown before the fiery reds even develop properly.

A sheltered spot with dappled afternoon shade, ideally against a plain wall or hedge that sets the deep crimson off, gets the best results.

Rowan and Mountain Ash

Clusters of orange-red berries on rowan, also sold as mountain ash, draw blackbirds and thrushes right through into winter.

It works as a genuine food source as well as decoration.

Rowan is a native tree across the Scottish countryside, and it copes with tougher, more exposed sites, while rowan trees give birds valuable habitat on open, windswept ground.

Birch, Cherry, Dogwood and Alder

A birch tree turns golden yellows rather than red, and that colour holds because birch drops its leaves gradually instead of all at once.

Underplanted with something dark, a single specimen does most of the work of a whole border.

Ornamental cherry varieties bring spring blossom as a bonus alongside decent autumn colour, and they fit a garden with room for only one or two trees and shrubs.

Dogwood, and the lesser-known mespilus, add winter interest too, as their bare stems carry on after the leaves have gone.

Alder is sometimes overlooked, but it shouldn’t be forgotten! It turns into a steady yellow foliage and suits a wilder corner of the garden better than a formal scheme, especially on damp ground.

Planting Trees for Autumn Colour

Acers want free-draining, slightly acidic soil and will sulk in heavy clay, while rowan and alder tolerate far rougher growing conditions and don’t need cosseting.

Always check what a species needs before picking one for your garden.

A good tree nursery gives realistic growth figures for a young tree’s eventual size, worth asking for rather than guessing against the space available.

Native trees such as rowan and alder support far more insect and bird life than imported ornamentals, and year round biodiversity matters as much as autumn colour.

A new tree needs room to root, particularly in urban areas where it competes with existing paving, drains and fences.

We plan that seasonal impact and root spread into our landscape design, to ensure your tree flourishes with its surroundings for years to come.

Looking After Your Autumn Trees

Young trees need real watering through their first two summers. Once established, most of the trees on this list look after themselves in your garden.

Maples bleed heavily if cut in spring, so late autumn or winter, once the tree is dormant and bare, is the right time for shaping them.

Rowan and birch are more forgiving but still respond better to a light touch than a heavy one.

Our tree pruning service times this work around each species rather than working to one fixed calendar.

Raked off a lawn and left to break down, fallen leaves make free mulch that protects roots over winter and feeds the soil as it rots.

A bare twig and branch structure is normal for trees in autumn and winter. Leave it unpruned through the coldest months unless there’s a safety reason not to.

Common Questions About Autumn Trees

What’s the best small tree for autumn colour in a Scottish garden?

A dwarf Acer palmatum in a large pot or border is hard to beat for a small space. It gives the strongest colour of anything on this list without needing the room a full-size maple or birch demands.

Why do some trees hold onto brown leaves through winter?

Young beech and some oaks keep their dead leaves until spring instead of dropping them in autumn, a trait called marcescence. Nobody fully agrees on why, though deterring browsing deer and protecting next year’s buds are the leading theories.

Do any trees flower in autumn?

Most flowering happens in spring, but a few exceptions do bloom in autumn, and some cherry varieties produce a light second autumnal flush of blossom alongside their autumn leaves in a mild year.
