Steps introduce a change of level that gives each section of the garden a defined character.

To calculate the number of steps, divide the total rise by your intended riser height.

On a slope that rises 900mm, with a target riser height of 150mm, you need six steps.

Always round up rather than down. We believe that a short final riser at the top is safer than one that sits higher than expected.

Step Dimensions: Getting Riser Height and Tread Depth Right

The most widely used formula is: 2 × riser height + tread depth = 550-700mm, with 600mm considered the optimum.

For a garden step, a riser height of 120-175mm works for most situations, with 150mm being the comfortable middle ground.

Tread depth should run 300-450mm for an outdoor flight of step.

Sandstone, limestone, and granite all work well as step treads.

A sawn or sandblasted finish provides a non-slip surface that handles wet Scottish weather and frost without affecting the appearance of the stone.

A common cost-effective approach uses natural stone slab treads above brick risers.

The tread surface is what you see from above, so placing the more expensive stone there and brick construction beneath keeps the visual quality without using stone throughout.

Full natural stone steps, with stone risers as well as stone treads, are the more consistent option for a formal stone garden where the materials need to carry from the patio through to the step design.

Brick Steps and Brick Risers

Brick steps suit cottage garden settings and contemporary hard landscaping equally well.

Brick and concrete construction, using engineering brick or hard-wearing outdoor brick for the risers with concrete slab or natural stone treads, is durable and straightforward to adapt to both straight and curved flights.

Brick risers with paved steps above them are the most common approach in residential hard landscaping. This is partly because brick can be cut to fit any tread width and handles both square and curved geometries.

With brick, the grade specification matters.

Standard facing brick is too porous for outdoor use in Scotland and will absorb water, freeze, and spall within a few seasons.

Frost-resistant engineering brick or class B engineering brick is the correct specification for outdoor steps in any climate with regular frost.

Timber and Railway Sleepers

Timber steps built with railway sleepers suit informal gardens, woodland edges, and outdoor spaces where a natural garden feel is the priority.

Railway sleepers are durable relative to their cost, easy to work with, and well-proportioned for use as garden step risers.

Even treated hardwood degrades faster outdoors than stone or brick, and sleepers that soften over years of wet weather can become unstable under foot.
