Remove a dormant tree unnecessarily and you lose something that would have come back. Leave a dead tree in place and the risk of a large branch failing grows every month as the wood dries and becomes very brittle.
Here is exactly what to look out for, by tree removal experts.
Start here: the cambium scratch test
Before working through the visual signs, the scratch test gives a direct answer on most trees.
Look for signs of life in the layer directly beneath the bark: find a small twig and scratch back a thin strip of outer bark with a fingernail or penknife.
If the cambium layer underneath is green and slightly moist, that part of the tree is alive. If the layer is brown, dry, or chalky white, it’s dead in that section.
Run the test on the trunk and on several branches in different parts of the canopy.
A tree that shows green under the bark at the trunk but brown on the branches of the tree is likely dying rather than fully dead.
Repeat the scratch test on a few different branches to map how far the die-back has progressed.
Signs of a dead or dying tree
No leaves during the growing season
A tree with no leaves during the growing season, when nearby trees are in full leaf, is showing signs of serious decline.
Bare branches in June or July on a deciduous tree warrant a closer look.
Check the buds along the branches.
Plump, firm buds signal a live tree, while shrivelled or absent buds suggest the branch has died.
Brown leaves clinging to the tree well into winter can also indicate dieback, because dead branches don’t release leaves cleanly.
Peeling bark and trunk condition
Bark that falls away from the trunk and branches, with no new bark growing underneath, is a reliable sign of a dead tree.
Living trees replace outer bark continuously, and once a tree dies, that replacement process stops.
Inspect the trunk for cracks, splits, or sections where bark has already fallen. Exposed wood that’s grey, dry, and crumbling indicates the wood has started to decompose.
Check the base of the tree trunk for soft or sunken sections. Rot at the root system speeds up structural failure significantly, and at that stage consider removing the tree before it becomes unstable.
Fungus growing on the tree
Fungi growing on the tree trunk or at the base of the tree is a strong indicator of internal decay.
Bracket fungus growing directly from the bark, mushrooms growing in a cluster around the base, or a ring of organic matter at ground level all suggest the wood inside is decomposing.
Not every fungal growth signals death. Some fungal species grow on the bark of live trees without causing structural harm.
Large bracket fungi on the trunk and branches, or mushrooms growing from the root system, should be assessed by an arborist who can judge whether the decay has reached the structural wood.
Dead branches throughout the canopy
A few dead branches in an otherwise healthy canopy is normal.
When dead branches are distributed through the whole tree rather than confined to one area, the tree is in serious decline.
Pick up a branch from the ground beneath the tree and try to bend it. The response tells you a lot.
Live wood flexes and bends before any break, while dead wood snaps cleanly and immediately without any give.
Wood becomes very brittle quickly once a tree dies, and large branches can fail without warning in conditions a healthy tree would handle easily.
Cavities and pest activity in the trunk
Inspect the trunk for hollow sections or cavities.
A cavity in a tree trunk doesn’t automatically mean the tree is dead, but it indicates structural weakness and possible internal decay.
Check what’s found under the bark around any cavity.
Galleries of tunnels made by bark beetles, soft crumbling wood, and white or yellow fungal growth are all signs of decomposition in progress. Inspect the trunk and branches carefully in these areas.
Heavy woodpecker damage across the trunk and branches is another indicator.
Woodpeckers excavate trunks to find food in dying trees, and their presence points to established insect colonies living in the decaying wood.
Root damage and epicormic shoots
Dead and dying trees often show early signs at the base. Raised or cracked soil around the roots of trees after wet weather can indicate root failure.
Soil compaction from vehicles or machinery, excavation near the tree, or changes in drainage can all trigger a slow decline above ground.
Epicormic shoots sprouting from the lower trunk or from the base of the tree are a stress response. The tree pushes out these fast-growing small branches from dormant buds in the bark when it’s under severe pressure.
Epicormic shoots on an otherwise bare or declining canopy usually signal the tree is struggling, and an arborist assessment at that point makes sense.
Signs of a healthy tree
Full leaf cover, intact bark, and good structure
A healthy tree produces consistent green leaves in season, shows growth of new buds and branches each spring, and has bark that is intact with no large sections peeling away.
The canopy should be full, with branches and leaves distributed evenly around the crown.
Roots of trees in good health are firm and anchored, with no significant soil heave around the base, no large cavities in the lower trunk, and no soft or sunken areas at ground level.
No fungus, flexible branches, and green cambium
A tree in good health won’t have bracket fungus growing from the trunk, and the wood in its branches will bend rather than snap under pressure.
When you inspect the trunk and scratch back the bark, the cambium layer should be consistently green throughout.
A tree and shrub specialist can distinguish between normal deadwood that can be removed by pruning and the kind of dieback that signals a more serious underlying problem. Isolated patches of dead wood in the canopy don’t mean the whole tree is in trouble.
Dead tree vs dormant tree: the winter problem
Dormancy is the most common reason homeowners mistake a live tree for a dead one. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn and stay bare until spring, so a healthy tree in January looks exactly like a dead one to the untrained eye.
The scratch test cuts through the uncertainty. Scratch back a small section of bark on any bare branch and look at the layer underneath: green and moist confirms the tree is dormant, whatever the season looks like from the outside. Find brown or dry cambium and that section is dead.
In late winter, also check the buds at the branch tips.
On a dormant tree, buds are beginning to swell and show signs of breaking. Dead branch tips either carry no buds at all, or carry buds that are dry and shrivelled with no sign of movement.
The risks of leaving a dead tree in place
Once a tree is fully dead, its structural integrity deteriorates at a rate that depends on species, size, and local conditions.
How quickly the structure fails varies considerably: some trees hold their form for years after death, while others become dangerous within months.
Dead branches can cause injury to people and damage to property without warning. The wood becomes very brittle as it dries out, and large branches can fail in light wind that a healthy tree would handle without any issue.
A dead tree close to a house, path, or area where people regularly walk should be removed as soon as possible once the diagnosis is confirmed. The longer it’s left, the less predictable the failure points become.
Root diseases and fungal pathogens can also spread from a dead tree to live trees growing in the same root zone, particularly in compact soil conditions. Prompt removal of a dead tree limits the risk to multiple trees nearby.
The wildlife value of a dead standing tree
A dead standing tree left in place, known as a snag, provides habitat for many species that rely on decaying wood.
Woodpeckers, bats, beetles, and specialist insects all use snags, and the decomposition process returns organic matter to the soil over time.
